The Federal Government has announced two co-located solar and battery projects for North Queensland, to be delivered by Edify Energy at Majors Creek (adjacent to Lansdown).
The projects – successful under the Capacity Investment Scheme - will ensure new affordable and reliable electricity will be brought into the grid to meet demand between now and 2030.
Edify Energy successfully tendered two co-located dispatchable renewable energy projects and have been awarded Federal contracts to be delivered and operational by 2028.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy - Hon Chris Bowen MP
“The Albanese Labor Government is delivering Australian households and businesses an energy system that is lowest cost, more reliable and better equipped to power Australian homes and businesses now and into the future," Mr Bowen said.
“We are also making sure that the communities who host these projects see the benefits of them – with strong commitment to use Australian manufacturing and hire local people.”
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith
"We're proud to see our Member - Edify Energy - receive this Federal support to build Queensland’s largest solar and battery project in North Queensland; backing a real project that will deliver real outcomes for this region,” Ms Brumme-Smith said.
“We thank the Federal Government for their support and congratulate Edify Energy for putting Townsville North Queensland on the national and global map for energy transition once again.”
"This region has some of the best wind and solar resources in the country, and the projects at Majors Creek will capitalise on this unique advantage to offer energy security to residents and industry."
"The Ganymirra and Majors Creek Solar Power Stations will further enable this region's green industry ambitions, guaranteeing the development of Lansdown projects, and delivering renewable power for generations to come."
Edify Energy CEO and Founder, John Cole
"We're proud to have been successful with two of the three projects announced for Queensland under this Federal Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme, bringing this region's potential to life with innovative, high-tech, dispatchable clean energy projects supporting local industry and community with long-term energy supply."
"This project has a multitude of benefits - not only as we grow our green energy capabilities - but to the broader community through First Nations benefits, and local employment."
"During the construction phase, the solar power station will create over 400 jobs - directly and indirectly supporting local businesses in the community, through hospitality, retail and services."
Background
The Ganymirra and Majors Creek Solar Power Stations are approved to generate 300MW of green power, storing and dispatching 1200 MW hours of the energy generated from North Queensland sunshine. Located near Woodstock, in Queensland and covering an area of 539.5 hectares, the facilities may serve as a source for renewable hydrogen, for both domestic applications in Townsville and internationally, creating a new export market.
The stats:
- 300MW solar generation
- 1200 MW hours battery storage
- Construction from 2026 to 2028
