State Election: Top 5 Asks for North Queensland

30th September 2024

As the countdown to the Queensland State Election begins, North Queensland leaders and communities are pushing for urgent commitments from all parties to address critical issues. Townsville Enterprise, in collaboration with North Queensland’s councils, is calling for key investments that will shape the future of the region. These top five priorities span essential infrastructure, housing, tourism, and health, with each project expected to deliver long-term benefits for the region's economic growth and liveability.

1. Housing Package and Regional Housing Policies

North Queensland faces a severe housing shortage that threatens its $36 billion investment pipeline. Townsville Enterprise is advocating for a $65 million housing package into trunk infrastructure, build to rent high density apartments and legislative changes that could unlock the development of over 5,650 residential lots. Additionally, incentives for regional housing development and the expansion of housing supply are urgently needed to ensure affordable, accessible accommodation for workers and communities.

2. Health Services Investment

To improve the quality of life for North Queenslanders, significant investments in healthcare infrastructure are critical. Townsville Enterprise calls for a $578 million upgrade of health services, including the expansion of Townsville University Hospital with additional services such as deep brain stimulation, expanded mental health facilities and enhanced maternity care. This investment will provide the region with world-class health services, reducing the need for residents to travel for essential treatments. Included in this ask is $300 million towards an urgently needed new hospital for Charters Towers.

3. Tourism Development and Liveability

The tourism industry remains a vital economic driver for North Queensland and supports liveability and workforce attraction. Key projects include the creation of a Magnetic Island Koala Hospital to promote eco-tourism, and the development of the Paluma to Wallaman Trail, which will unlock the nation’s first indigenous led multi-day eco trail. Additionally, Townsville Enterprise advocates for the construction of a $360 million Arts and Entertainment Arena, providing a venue to host large-scale indoor events.

 4. Haughton Pipeline Stage 2

Ensuring long-term water security is essential for North Queensland’s growth. Completing Stage 2 of the Haughton Pipeline will guarantee a reliable water supply to meet the needs of the growing population and industries. Townsville Enterprise’s advocacy document calls on an additional $160 million grant request to cover escalating costs due. This pipeline is critical to securing water for residential, industrial, and agricultural use, ensuring Townsville’s continued development.

5. Port of Townsville Expansion

The next stage of the Port expansion will provide two new common-user berths and enhanced infrastructure to accommodate growing demand in the mining, agricultural, and renewable energy sectors. Townsville Enterprise is advocating for $240 million from the State Government to complete this project, which is expected to create significant economic value and position North Queensland as a global trade hub.

Claudia Brumme-Smith, CEO of Townsville Enterprise:

“Our region’s future depends on strategic investments in housing, health, tourism, water security, and our port infrastructure. These top five priorities are not just asks—they are essential to unlocking North Queensland’s potential and securing a prosperous future for our community.”

“The region contributes over $22bn every year in GRP and our community deserves to our fair share of that money coming back to the region during this election.”

“We are calling on all political parties to commit to these critical projects that will support our economic growth, improve liveability, and ensure that North Queensland remains competitive on the global stage.”
